THE Old Boys Association of Dennis Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha, AnambraState, has launched a N500 million endowment fund for the development of the school. The endowment fund is expected to be raised within five years.President-General of the association, Mr. Gibson Okeke, stated this during a press conference at the school’s auditorium to mark the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the school.Dennis Memorial Grammar School Onitsha was founded by the Church Missionary Society in 1925 in memory of Archdeacon T.J. Dennis, one of the early missionaries who remarkably achieved the feat of translating the English Bibleinto Igbo language.Okeke said. “DMGS is the oldest secondary school in Igboland and has built a solid reputation over the years based on high standards of teaching and discipline clearly shown by the products of theschool living true to her motto; lux fiat, (show the light). He said, “The Nigerian civil war (1967 to 1970) destroyed many buildings in the school. As a result, many students became day students post-war and the level of discipline dropped.“The takeover of schools by the state government after the civil war further compromised the traditions and standards established in DMGS.”He maintained that the old students of the school had been the bulwark in the rehabilitation and reconstruction of DMGS, saying, “By the Golden Jubilee celebration of the school in 1975, the Red Brick School blocks had been fully rehabilitated."
