Tension Grips Abia As Ikpeazu, Otti Know Fate Today

The political temperature in Abia State rose sharply monday as news filtered that the governorship election petition tribunal sitting in Umuahia would deliver its verdict today. The petition filed by the governorship flag bearer of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Mr. Alex Otti, challenging the election of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is the only case for determination. The high level anxiety being generated by the petition was due to the stiff opposition that APGA gave PDP, which had held sway in the state for most of the period, except for the three year brief period that the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) was in government before the then governor defected to the PDP. The governorship election held on April 11, 2015 in the state ended inconclusively thereby necessitating a supplementary poll of April 25, 2015. Consequently the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after collating the final tally, declared Ikpeazu wi...

The presidency has warned Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, to stop making unsubstantiated allegations pertaining to the running of the economy by the Muhammadu Buhari-led government.

The governor equally knows full well that his party, while in government, ruined the economy to the extent that workers in 27 states went for several months without salary. This crisis situation has now been reversed in nearly all the states. Governor Fayose is himself in line for the collection of his state’s bailout. “Under the PDP federal government, ministries were not given overhead costs for five months while the capital budget was unpaid for six months in the run-up to the exit of the PDP administration. Is there anyone in that party with a moral justification to criticise the Buhari administration which is working hard to clean up the mess they (PDP) left behind?” Specifically, the presidency said Fayose’s comment on the September federal allocation of N389 billion was reckless and typical of his past unguarded outbursts. The senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, who sounded the presidency’s warning, was reacting to remarks ...

Pro-jonathan Elements Behind Renewed Agitation For Biafra - Senator Sani

The senator representing Kaduna North Senatorial zone, Kaduna state, Senator Shehu Sani, at the weekend alleged that the new agitation for the sovereign state of Biafra was being sponsored by pro-Jonathan forces who lost the 2015 general elections. Sani, who spoke on Sunday when a youth group from southern Kaduna paid him a courtesy call in his office in Kaduna, described the renewed agitation for Biafra as misguided and ill conceived. "The Biafra agitation is a new attempt to destroy the Mohammadu Buhari administration and to ignite a national conflict and cause chaos, pandemonium , confusion in the country. ‘We’ll show Arsenal’, insists Bayern’s Vidal

Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal says Bayern Munich can prove a point by beating Arsenal in the Champions League on Wednesday. Pep Guardiola’s Bavarian giants suffered their only defeat of the season at the Emirates Stadium when they lost 2-0 to Arsenal a fortnight ago in Europe. The Germans failed to convert a string of chances in London as Oliver Giroud and Mesut Ozil scored second-half goals for Arsenal. Having won their first 10 league games, Bayern then dropped their first Bundesliga points on Friday with a goalless draw at Eintracht Frankfurt. Guardiola’s Bayern are becoming frustrated by their German opponents’ defensive tactics, but midfielder Vidal is backing his team to shoot the Gunners down in the return at Munich’s Allianz Arena. “We’ll show Arsenal the real Bayern on Wednesday,” the Chile international told German daily Bild. “This time we’ll use our chances and take the three points.” Despite the defeat at Arsenal, Bayern remain top of Group F while ...

Syria rebels using caged captives as ‘human shields

A major Syrian rebel group is using dozens of captives in metal cages as “human shields” in the largest opposition stronghold on the outskirts of Damascus, a monitor said Sunday. Jaish al-Islam, regarded as the most powerful rebel group near the capital, has put regime soldiers and Alawite civilians it was holding in metal cages, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told AFP. The group then placed these cages in public squares in the Eastern Ghouta region in an attempt to “prevent regime bombardment”, Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said. “Jaish al-Islam is using these captives and kidnapped people — including whole families — as human shields,” he said. Government forces regularly bombard the Eastern Ghouta area, from where rebel groups fire rockets into the capital. On Friday, at least 70 people were killed and 550 wounded in regime bombardment of Douma, a large town in the area. A video published by opposition news outlet Shaam Network showed cages of me...

The wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, has commended Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos for donating N150 million to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe. The commendation is contained in a statement signed by Buhari’s Special Assistant on Media, Adebisi Ajayi, on Friday in Abuja. Buhari said the gesture would help to ameliorate the sufferings of IDPs in various camps in the affected states as well as in their rehabilitation, and urged other states and individuals to emulate the governor. She said that insurgency had remained a major challenge in the country but expressed optimism that it would soon be a thing of the past. She appealed to governors of the affected states to take measures at ensuring that children in the IDPs’ camps were properly catered for. “I am grieved as a mother that children can go through such appalling conditions in their country,’’ Buhari said, noting that malnutrition rate of children in the camps ha...

IS overruns town in central Syria

Islamic State group jihadists seized a small town in Syria’s central Homs province Sunday with help from local rebels and advanced on a majority Christian village, a monitoring group said. “The Islamic State group easily took control of the village of Maheen, southeast of Homs, after two suicide attacks,” said Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Maheen lies 70 kilometres (43 miles) southeast of the government-controlled provincial capital Homs city, and 35 kilometres east of the Syrian-Lebanese border. For the past two years, a ceasefire between rebel factions in the town and regime troops at surrounding checkpoints had governed Maheen. But on Sunday the rebel factions turned against the government fighters and joined ranks with IS jihadists, Abdel Rahman said. IS launched its assault from the nearby Christian village of Al-Qaryatain, which it seized in August, he added. From Maheen, the jihadists pushed northeast toward the Ch...
